Alia Bhatt plays an Indian spy called Sehmat, who is married to a Pakistani colonel, played by Vicky Kaushal. The song is an ode to her patriotism and longing for her country. Talking about the song, Alia said, “This song Aye Vatan is an ode to these unsung heroes, whom we do not recognize, even though they have sacrificed so much for us.”
The film is helmed by Meghna Gulzar, the movie is based on Harinder Sikka’s book Calling Sehmat, a fictionalized take on the real story of an Indian woman who married a Pakistani man to spy for India. The movie releases on May 11, 2018.
