Pakistani actress takes pot shots at Indian actors, 'in fun'

After branding Bollywood superstar #Salman_Khan a "chhichhora" (indecent) and claiming she wouldn't like to work with actor Emraan Haashmi for the fear of mouth cancer, on a TV show, Pakistani actress #Saba_Qamar has defended her comments as a mere banter.

Saba, who is set to make her Bollywood debut with Irrfan Khan starrer "Hindi Medium", took a dig at some of India's cine stars on talk show "Good Morning Zindagi". An excerpt from the Pakistani show has gone viral on social media -- and Saba has been inundated with calls over it.

"It was a fun show... There was nothing in it... 'Koffee With Karan' mein kya kuchch nahi hota (What all does not happen on 'Koffee With Karan')... I love everyone, and he's (Salman) a big superstar and so humble. Why would I say anything bad about him?"

In the two minute-plus long video, the host asks Saba to say 'no' to hypothetical situations involving Hrithik Roshan, Emraan Hashmi, Ranbir Kapoor, Riteish Deshmukh and Salman -- and state why would she say 'no'.

When the host asked Saba if Hrithik asked her to marry him, how would she say no, Saba said: "Don't want a father of two... He is not my cup of tea."

Next was Bollywood's 'serial kisser' Emraan Hashmi, whom she rejected because she didn't want "mouth cancer".

Select the right wedding venue

One of the most important decisions affecting wedding celebrations is choosing the right #wedding_venue. From blocking the place at the right time to doing your research properly are some of the factors that one should keep in mind while selecting it, says an expert.

select-right-wedding-venue
Rahul Arora, Director at Grandreams, a wedding planning service, has shared a few tips that could guide you in covering most of your problems:

* Date: Deciding the date of the event is primarily the first step to realise your plans. Once you are certain, why wait? It is only in the interest of the client, as he is at a better position to negotiate due to low demand.

It is the traditional first-come, first-served policy that is applied by all venues. Once the wedding season is round the corner, the demand rockets consequently turning the tables on negotiation and priority.

* Guest count: Before you choose a venue, you ought to know your guest list. Knowing these numbers helps in setting a realistic budget and sidelines all trivial troubles.

The findings in the study led by Marta Guasch-Ferre, researcher at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in the US, showed that people who consumed 12 grams per day of butter had a two-fold higher risk of developing diabetes.

Saturated and animal fat such as cheese and butter that are rich in saturated fatty acids and trans fats, their intake creates greater risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, whereas whole-fat yogurt intake is associated with a lower risk.

On the other hand, plant-based diets -- rich in legumes, whole-grain cereals, fruits, vegetables and nuts -- have been found more beneficial for health than animal-based foods such as red meat and processed meat, and also have less impact on the environment.

Soda, pizza and salty food up liver disease in kids: Study

Children who regularly intake fructose present in #soda, sweetened #beverages, #pizza and salty food, biscuits, yogurt may be be prone to liver disease, researchers warn.

soda-pizza-and-salty-food-up-liver-disease-in-kids
According to a study, led by researchers from Bambino Gesu Hospital in Italy, dietary fructose increases serum uric acid concentrations.

Both uric acid concentration and fructose consumption may be high in individuals with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) -- a condition where extra fat is accumulated in liver cells in people who drink little or no alcohol.

It is estimated to affect up to 30 per cent of the general population in Western countries and up to 9.6 per cent of all children and 38 per cent of obese children across a spectrum of liver disease, including NASH (defined as steatosis, hepatocyte ballooning and inflammation).

Although NASH is a less aggressive form of NAFLD, it can progress to severe fibrosis and cirrhosis, with development of hepatocellular carcinoma in adults.

The findings suggested that fructose consumption was independently associated with high uric acid, which occurred more frequently in patients with NASH than in not-NASH patients.

"It is plausible that dietary fructose intake and uric acid concentrations are potential risk factors for liver disease progression in NAFLD," said Valerio Nobili from Bambino Gesu Hospital in Italy.

"The study shows for the first time that uric acid concentrations and dietary fructose consumption are independently and positively associated with NASH," Nobili added.

For the study, reported in the Journal of Hepatology, the team analysed 271 obese children and adolescents with NAFLD -- 155 males, mean age 12.5 years -- who underwent liver biopsy.

Your belly fat may up diabetes, heart disease risk

If you are having an apple shaped body -- in which weight is deposited around the abdomen -- it may be high time to reduce the belly fat.

your-belly-fat-may-up-diabetes-heart-disease-risk
A study warns that people who are genetically inclined to storing belly fat may be at an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease.

"People vary in their distribution of body fat -- some put fat in their belly, which we call abdominal adiposity and some in their hips and thighs," says Sekar Kathiresan, Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School in Boston.

"We tested whether genetic predisposition to abdominal adiposity was associated with the risk for Type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease and found that the answer was a firm 'yes'," Kathiresan added.

Previous research had identified 48 gene variants associated with waist-to-hip ratio, resulting in a genetic risk score.

For the new study, appearing in the journal of JAMAA, the team analysed the genomes of a total research group of more than 400,000 individuals.

Lift up your mood with lip colour

No matter how you feel every day, your lip colour can be the perfect channel to express your mood.

ift-up-your-mood-with-lip-colour
From the monotony of Mondays to freedom guaranteed on Fridays, one can lift up the moods with lip shades each day of the week.

"Today's modern woman understands completely what a vibrant bold mouth is all about and what it does to elevate her mood, amplify desire and leave a lasting impression," said Elton J. Fernandez, official make-up artist at Maybelline New York.

"The strength of a colour adds layers to our lives and dramatic dimension to people and places. A great lip colour can boost your confidence and uplift your mood," Fernandez said.

"It's a creative extension of how you feel, letting you communicate the unspoken. Go conquer the world with the right lip colour and let your lips do the talking," he added.

Give expression to your emotions with a dash of colour as Fernandez has listed tips on how women can make their week beautiful with lipstick.

♦ Manic Mondays: The weekend is over. Fun gets a full stop and we have to start acting like adults. We completely understand and relate to that urge of crawling back into bed and leaving the world behind. Instead, we want to confront the world, go big and bold. Wear your mood on your mouth and opt for more daring shades of red or even a maroon.

♦ Tranquil Tuesdays: You're only a day closer in the long wait for liberty. Now you've come to terms with the inescapable bleakness of a Tuesday. There's a definite drop in excitement levels with the sullen lull of the second day. Channel your 'meh' mood with colours like mauve, taupe, nudes and tawny.

♦ Wicked Wednesdays: You've made it through almost half the week and still going strong. This shows endurance and it definitely deserves a reward. Indulge in the richness of shades like berry, burgundy or even a chocolate. Let your fearless spirit take over the world with these intense pigments.

Marriage makes you happier

Offering couples more reasons to celebrate love on this Valentine's Day -- and beyond, a new study has found that married people face less psychological stress than unmarried individuals.

marriage-makes-you-happier
Married individuals had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol than those who never married or were previously married, showed the study published in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology.

Prolonged stress is associated with increased levels of cortisol which can interfere with the body's ability to regulate inflammation, which in turn promotes the development and progression of many diseases.

"It is exciting to discover a physiological pathway that may explain how relationships influence health and disease," said one of the researchers Brian Chin from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, US.

Over three non-consecutive days, the researchers collected saliva samples from 572 healthy adults aged 21-55. Multiple samples were taken during each 24-hour period and tested for cortisol.

The results showed that the married participants had lower cortisol levels than the never-married or previously-married people across the three day period.

The researchers also compared each person's daily cortisol rhythm -- typically, cortisol levels peak when a person wakes up and decline during the day.

The designer, who has styled celebrities including Paris Hilton, Beyonce and Priyanka Chopra, added: "To offer the world of fashion a small part of India through my art, each time I showcase, is certainly elating."

Talking about his collection, Rocky said: "The collection speaks of the beauty that surrounds us; the one that meets the eye and our ability to see beyond the one that doesn't. This collection carters to the beauty of imperfection."

Avoid becoming a boring speaker

Do you feel that your friends are getting bored while listening to your stories or personal experiences? If so, try saying things that are more familiar to them, suggests a research.

The study showed that although both speakers and listeners expected new stories -- such as ranging from exotic vacations to celebrity sightings -- to be more interesting, listeners showed more pleasure with familiar stories.

Hearing experiences one has not seen or known may leave the listener bored, confused and underwhelmed.

The reason may be because the experiences shared are so complex that they are nearly impossible for an ordinary person to communicate well, the researchers said.

"Our friends are actually a whole lot happier when we tell them what they already know because at least they understand what we're talking about," said Daniel T. Gilbert, psychological scientist at Harvard University.

"We worry too much about thrilling our listeners and not enough about confusing them," Gilbert added.

For the study, published in Psychological Science, the team conducted a series of experiments.

In one of their experiments, the researchers assigned participants to groups of three, with one person acting as the speaker and the other two acting as listeners.

Fight your cold and flu with Vitamin D

Regular intake of #Vitamin_D supplements may help protect against cold and flu, as well as tackle high levels of the vitamin's deficiency in countries like India, a study has said.

The 'sunshine vitamin' as it known, not just improves bone and muscle health but also protects against respiratory infections by boosting levels of antimicrobial peptides -- natural antibiotic-like substances -- in the lungs.

Acute respiratory infections such as pneumonia are a major cause of global morbidity and mortality.

"Most people understand that Vitamin D is critical for bone and muscle health. Our analysis has found that it helps the body fight acute respiratory infection,...," said Carlos Camargo from the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).

The findings showed that daily or weekly supplementation halved the risk of acute respiratory infection in people with most significant Vitamin D deficiency -- below 25 nanomoles per litre (nmol/L).

Administering occasional high doses of Vitamin D did not produce significant benefits.

People with higher baseline Vitamin D levels also benefited, although the effect was more modest (10 per cent risk reduction), the researchers noted, in the paper published in the journal BMJ.

His advice for them: "Don't reproduce what's already there."

"Follow your heart and create something that is unique because it is important for every artist to have a signature. Without it, you are nothing," Bal said.

"It's great that the young designers today are delving into the rich heritage of India and its textiles, because we still have an untapped creative potential and a reservoir of artists who we can bring to the main platform if they are given enough opportunities.

"My advice to young designers is to create something that develops into your signature. Don't reproduce what's already there."

Working with veterans unnerving for new actors: Manjari Phadnis

Actress #Manjari_Fadnis, who is sharing screen space with acclaimed actors like Ashutosh Rana, Supriya Pathak and Prem Chopra in her upcoming #JeenaIsikaNaamHain, says she was a little scared to work with so many veterans.

"Working with veterans is unnerving for new actors because you want to match up to their performance," said Manjari at the music launch of the film on Wednesday.

"It has been a great opportunity to learn from veteran actors like them. I've seen Ashutosh sir in films like 'Sangharsh', 'Dushman', etc. But when I actually met him, he was so warm and encouraged me a lot on the set," she said.

"Many times Ashutosh sir gave me tips on acting. I've worked with Supriya ma'am in 'Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon'. She is a wonderful lady. I am extremely lucky to work with such great actors," the "Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na" actress said.

The film not only presents different slices of life but also exhibits the colourful journey of the characters. The movie has been shot in various places in India and the US and captures the grandeur of the countries in its true form.

Speaking about her role, the 32-year-old actress said: "My role in 'Jeena Isika Naam Hai' starts from when she is 18 years till she turns much older. Therefore, the role has so many graphs regarding the experiences she goes through. My character is a positive character and evolves through the story. It was a challenging, but a very learning experience for me."
