Video game addiction can lead to sleep deprivation

Video game addiction can lead to sleep deprivation, thereby putting the players at serious risk of numerous health issues associated with sleep loss such as obesity and cardiovascular diseases, warns a study.

"This is an important phenomenon to understand. We are seeing that some children and teens develop serious addiction-like symptoms to video games," said co-author of the study Katherine Morrison, associate professor of pediatrics at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada.

video-game-addiction-can-lead-to-sleep-deprivation"It affects a vulnerable population of children and youth, can impact social interactions amongst youth and, as our research shows, can drive health issues," Morrison noted.

For their research, the team studied a group of children and teenagers aged 10 to 17 who were in lifestyle management programmes - either for weight management or lipid disorders.

The study looked at whether the video game habits of the group had an impact on sleep habits, obesity and cardio-metabolic health.

Don't make important decisions on empty stomach

Decisions are best taken when you are full. Researchers have found that the hormone ghrelin -- that is released before meals and is known to increase the appetite -- has a negative effect on both decision making and impulse control.

"For the first time, we have been able to show that increasing ghrelin levels that are seen prior to meals or during fasting, causes the brain to act impulsively and also affects the ability to make rational decisions," said one of the researchers Karolina Skibicka from Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg in Sweden.

dont-make-important-decisions-on-empty-stomach
When hungry, the hormone ghrelin is produced in the stomach. In the new study conducted on rats, the hormone has been shown to have a negative effect on decision making capabilities and impulse control.

The rats can be trained to be rewarded (with sugar) when they execute an action such as pressing a lever ("go") -- or instead they can be rewarded only when they resist pressing the lever ("no-go") when an appropriate signal is given.

They learn this by repeatedly being given a signal, for example, a flash of light or a buzzing sound that tells them which action should be executed for them to receive their reward.

Feel good about your looks and enjoy super sex life

People who are happy and confident about their appearance are more satisfied with their sex lives, have better self esteem and enjoy healthy relationships with their spouses, a study reveals.

According to the researchers, body image is strongly linked to overall life satisfaction and feelings about romantic relationships.

"The study shows that men's and women's feelings about their weight and appearance play a major role in how satisfied they are with their lives overall," said lead study author David Frederick from Chapman University in the US.

The findings are consistent with the emphasis placed on the importance of being slender for women and for appearing athletic and lean for men.

"It would seem, therefore, that we still have a long way to go before we achieve the goal of being truly happy with their bodies," Frederick added in the paper published in the journal Body Image.

The team analysed more than 12,000 participants between ages 18 and 65 years and asked questions focused on personality, beliefs about romantic relationships, self-esteem, television viewing and personal characteristics.

To save water, Karan stops shooting

Upset that a lot of water would be wasted amid drought in a shooting sequence, actor Karan Patel refused to shoot for "Ye Hai Mohabbatein" -- until his concerns were met.

to-save-water-karan-stops-shootingKaran had to shoot for a romantic track which required artificial rain, for which a lot of water was to be used. Karan refused to shoot considering the amount of water that would get wasted.

“I thought the scene was avoidable considering the water crisis we are facing. We at our level should try our best to save and conserve water,” Karan said in a statement.

“I feel it’s our duty as we are looked up by people. This is the least as actors we can do. So I asked the production house to manage and create a scene where they do not have to use water,” he added.

Beauty myths busted

Does application of castor oil increase growth of eyelash and eyebrow hair or is cleansing milk a more effective way to clean deep pores? An expert separates myth from reality.

Here's what Dr.Navin Taneja, director of The National Skin Centre, has to say:

♦ Myth: Skin cream and moisturiser with vitamins A, E and other plants extract prevents ageing and skin wrinkling.

beauty-myths-bustedReality: Most of these substances are not absorbed topically and hence carry no added advantage over a plain moisturiser. Some of them are humectants and thus act as moisturisers and temporarily improve wrinkles.

♦ Myth: Use of castor oil increases growth of eyelash and eyebrow hair.

Reality: Application of any oil does not affect rate of hair growth except for the possible effects of the massage action.

How cancer becomes drug-resistant

A team of researchers, including an Indian-American scientist, has found that the major reason cancer drugs fail is that they cannot penetrate the high-pressure environment of solid tumours.

The findings revealed that hyaluronic acid -- a large, naturally occurring molecule -- is primarily responsible for generating elevated gel-fluid pressures in tumours.

"We show that the gel-fluid phase generates a primary mechanism of drug resistance in pancreas cancer," said lead researcher Sunil Hingorani from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in the US.

A hyaluronidase treatment -- family of enzymes that degrade hyaluronic acid -- holds promise for improving patient outcomes for drug-resistant cancers.

In the study, published in Biophysical Journal, the team conducted hyaluronidase treatment in a mouse model of pancreatic cancer and found that it broke down hyaluronic acid as well as normalised the fluid pressure in tumours, allowing vessels to re-expand and thereby overcoming a major barrier to drug delivery.

Are we bad at judging our real friends?

Most people feel that friendship is a two-way street, but only half of your buddies would actually consider you their friend, a study has found, adding that this limits their ability to influence them and further impacts on human behaviour.

are-we-bad-at-judging-our-real-friends
Companies and social groups that depend on social influence for collective action, information dissemination and product promotion could improve their strategies and interventions.

"It turns out that we're very bad at judging who our friends are and difficulty in determining the reciprocity of friendship significantly limits our ability to engage in cooperative arrangements," said Erez Shmueli from Tel Aviv University.

“We learned that we can't rely on our instincts or intuition. There must be an objective way to measure these relationships and quantify their impact," Shmueli added in a paper published in the journal PLoS One.

Short sleep linked to poor breast cancer survival

Short sleep duration combined with frequent snoring reported prior to cancer diagnosis may influence subsequent breast cancer survival, says a study.

short-sleep-linked-to-poor-breast
One potential mechanism underlying this relationship is the adverse effect of poor sleep on inflammatory pathways, which may be a contributing factor in the development and progression of cancer, the researchers said.

The study found that women who typically slept less than the recommended 7 hours of sleep per night and were frequent snorers in the years before their cancer diagnosis experienced a poorer cancer prognosis.

Obesity during pregnancy can make your baby fat

In a warning to soon-to-be mothers, researchers have recommended healthy and nutritious food during pregnancy as excess weight and high blood sugar can make babies prone to childhood obesity.

Being overweight with elevated blood sugar affects the baby's metabolism in the womb.

"When women have elevated blood sugar and gain excess weight during pregnancy, it seems to change the baby's metabolism to 'imprint' the baby for childhood obesity," claimed lead study author Teresa Hillier from Kaiser Permanente Centre for Health Research in the US.

"We're not sure yet of the exact mechanism of this change but it appears that the baby is adapting to an overfed environment whether from glucose or extra weight," said Hillier in the paper published in the journal Maternal and Child Health Journal.

Newborns can't actually copy our gestures

If you thought human babies are capable of imitating facial gestures, hand gestures, facial expressions, or vocal sounds right from their first weeks of life after birth, think again! New research suggests that just is not so.
newborns-cant-actually-copy-our-gesturesAfter testing young infants repeatedly over their first couple of months, researchers found no evidence at all that very young infants are capable of imitation.

"Numerous studies from the 1980s and 90s indicated no imitation by newborns, while others claimed it was there," said one of the researchers Virginia Slaughter from University of Queensland in Australia.

"We wanted to clear up the confusion because the 'fact' that newborns imitate is widely cited, not just in the fields of psychology, neuroscience, and pediatrics, but also in popular sources for parents," Slaughter noted.

The findings now suggest that imitation is not an innate behaviour, but one that is learned in babies' first months. In fact, babies might learn to imitate other people based on watching other people imitate them.

Eat less to boost your sex life

If you are calorie conscious and have kept your meals to the healthier side to shed those extra kilos, cheer as there is another, bigger reason to do so - better action between the sheets.

According to an interesting study, eating less can not only help people lose weight, calorie restriction can improve mood and cut tension, leading to super sex drive.

eat-less-to-boost-your-sex-lifeTo reach this conclusion, researchers from the Pennington Biomedical Research Centre in Louisiana analysed the diets of 218 healthy adults who were followed for two years.

They were devided into two groups. One group was randomly assigned to cut their calorie intake by 25 percent.

The other group went on with the regular diet.

One of the researchers Corby Martin found that the calorie-restriction group reported improved mood and sex drive, www.sciencealert.com reported.

Being a foodie can actually keep you lean

Do you perceive yourself to be a foodie? If yes, chances are that you may end up influencing the amount of your intake as well as decrease the risk of becoming obese, often attributed to an addiction to food, finds new research.

According to researchers, when the study participants were told that they were great food addicts, they tend to consume fewer calories than those who were told they had low or average score.

Further, they also reported greater concern about their eating behaviour, which in turn, reduced the amount of time they spent tasting the foods.

"Our research found that participants who believed themselves to be 'food addicts' reduced the amount of time they were exposed to unhealthy foods and ate less as a result," according to Helen Ruddock, doctoral student at the University of Liverpool in Britain.

Deep-pitched voice in males liked to dominance

Male voices are not deeply pitched in order to attract female mates but to dominate the competition with other males, finds a new study that analysed a wide variety of primates including humans.

"We wanted to determine if sexual selection had produced sex differences in humans and closely related species," said David A. Puts, associate professor of anthropology, Pennsylvania State University.

The findings showed that a deep-pitched male voice was seen as dominant by other males but had a smaller impact on attracting females.

Human male traits imply physical aggression and formidability and seem to provide competitive advantages in fighting or threatening other men more than they help attract women.

"We find that masculine traits in humans are not the same as, say, in peacocks where the beautiful tail attracts a mate," said Puts in the paper published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

deep-pitched-voice-in-males-liked-to
Also, the researchers found that the depth in the female voices did not affect how attractive they were deemed by male listeners.

However, deeper male voices were rated as more dominant by men and more attractive by women.

In addition, in men with low levels of the cortisol -- stress hormone -- a higher level of testosterone was linked to a deeper voice.

Keep healthy options first to distract kids from junk food

Do you want your children to eat more healthy food and less fast food? Researchers have recommended placing healthy food more visibly, attractively and conveniently so that your child can eat and stay healthy.

Strongly preferred foods, like fries at fast food restaurants or red meat at buffets, are so standard that it can be difficult to get people -- especially children -- to opt for healthier options, even if the healthy option is the default.

keep-healthy-options-first-to-distract-kids-from-junk-food
The findings indicated that more children choose French fries over apples when apples were presented as the default option.

"We guessed that children would opt out of a healthier default when much-loved fries were an option," said David Just from the Cornell Food and Brand Lab in the US.

"We were surprised that this was the case even for a relatively attractive healthy option like apple slices," Just added in a paper published in the journal BMC Research Notes.

However, common favourites like yellow, red, orange and green, lost out to blue - when it came to second place at 27.2 percent.

Craftsvilla.com co-founder Monica Gupta said in a statement: "Indians are known for their love for colours. Each colour has different significance in Indian culture. When we embarked upon this survey, we were trying to understand what are the colours people like for daily wear, and what are the colours they like for occasion wear."

Maroon and gold trumped other colours to India’s favourite festive ethnic wear colours, among women with 33.9 percent and 31.9 percent preference respectively.
