♦ Don't store your bridal outfit in an area where change in temperature or humidity occurs.

♦ Cover it in a clean muslin sheet to protect it from light and dust.

♦ Don't hang your outfit by the shoulder straps, instead hang it by the loops located inside. By using loops, you can avoid stretching of the look of the outfit.

♦ Dry clean it immediately after your wedding to avoid staining and discolouration.

♦ Don't store your footwear with it as fumes from the leather and glue may cause damage and discoloration.

♦ Cover key areas of your wedding dress with uncoloured, acid-free tissue paper while travelling. You can wrap the folds with tissue paper to avoid wrinkling.

"We know that sexual satisfaction is an important element in relationships, but as far as we know, it hasn't been studied at this transition before. We wanted to know how parenting stress affects sexual satisfaction," said Chelom E. Leavitt from Penn State.

"Interestingly, we found that men's parenting stress had no impact on either men or women's sexual satisfaction," Leavitt added in the paper published in the journal Sex Roles.

Sleep apnea gets worse in post-menopausal women

Menopause can increase risk of developing sleep apnea, a potentially serious sleep disorder which can have negative effects on your health, says a city doctor.

Sleep apnea begins with partial blockage of the upper airway and leads to pauses in breathing while asleep.

As the condition aggravates, it takes the form of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in which the pauses in breathing become quite frequent, even amounting to 100 times in a single night.

sleep-apnea-gets-worse-in-post-menopausal-women
The condition is most common in women and worsens in the post-menopause period as the phase marks the end of the reproductive period of a woman and brings about a lot of hormonal, physical and psychological changes in them.

"The levels of estrogen and progesterone (hormones which protect the airways from collapsing) released in the body declines during menopause, as a result of which, women become more prone to contracting obstructive sleep apnea in this phase," said Vivek Nangia, director and HOD (Pulmonology) at Fortis Flt. Lt. Rajan Dhall Hospital, Vasant Kunj.

Hot tips to stay fit and healthy

Good sleep and regular exercise, choosing healthy food items and better cooking methods are the secrets of leading a healthy lifestyle, says an expert.

Saurabh Aggarwal, expert from fitness startup FITSO, suggests how to be healthy:

hot-tips-to-stay-fit-and-healthy
♦ Maintain a proper sleeping schedule, which for most people means seven to eight hours each night is important for fitness. Working out three to four times per week is a great way to start. Once you have your routine with you, stick to it and you will see the benefits. Three to four sessions of 20 to 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercises (run/jog/ride/walk) weekly is quite helpful to overall health.

♦ A healthy and balanced diet has ample vitamins, nutrients, and colour. And the easiest way to achieve this in your diet is through piling on the fruits and vegetables. In case of carbohydrate rich food items, include lean meat or white meat (without skin) in your meals. Prefer low-fat dairy products and avoid cheese, butter, heavy cream and yogurt. Use the suitable kind of oil like olive, and avoid frying or battering your food and making it spicy or too salty.

I thought I put all that in the final scene, but maybe I didn't. Maybe I was just gazing at Sebastian too much,” he added.

Bored of saris, anarkalis on special occasions

Go for pre-stitched saris in western silhouettes over traditional drape and try shararas with straight cut kurtas over anarkalis for an innovative look during special occasions if you're tired of the tried-and-tested, says an expert.

Designer Divya Gupta says one can break the conventionalism in fashion by opting for designs that look bold yet traditional. From flared palazzos and shararas, to opting for fabrics like chiffon and moonga silk, here are a few tips on how one can innovate with a traditional look:

♦ Silhouettes: The monotony of anarkalis has given way to straighter yet detailed, modern silhouettes teamed with the flared palazzos and skirts that accentuate the curvy Indian figure. Body hugging shararas in innovative lycra fabrics teamed with capes has become a key trend in Indian fashion.

bored-of-saris-anarkalis-on-special-occasions
Minimalist dressing has taken over the Indian fashion industry as well, with saris becoming essentially minimalist and young; making it truly modern yet close to its roots. The form has become non-conventional with stitched saris taking over the orthodox drape. Saris teamed with capes is also a modern take on the typical Indian wear for special occasions.

♦ Fabric: The extensive amalgamation of modern silhouettes with the traditional handloom fabric makes the current day occasion wear essentially rooted to Indian heritage. Silks in varied textures and patterns is ideal for special occasions.

Artificial sweeteners may harm your health

Are you turning to artificial sweeteners or other sugar substitutes to lose weight? Although these sweeteners may help obese individuals reduce and cut calories, they may also have negative health effects, a study warns.

Artificial sweeteners are not digested by the body. However, the recent study suggests that bacteria in the gut may be able to break down artificial sweeteners, resulting in negative health effects.

artificial-sweeteners-may-harm-your-health
Currently, there are many new sugar substitutes that are used in foods and beverages and are marketed as "sugar-free" or "diet," including soft drinks, chewing gum, jellies, baked goods, candy, fruit juice and ice cream and yogurt.

"Our study shows that individuals with obesity who consume artificial sweeteners, particularly aspartame, may have worse glucose management than those who don't take sugar substitutes," said Jennifer Kuk from York University's school of kinesiology and health science in Canada.

Best of your sex life begins at 40!

Far from resulting in loss of libido, reaching 40 could actually make your sex life more adventurous, says a study.

The findings are based on a survey of 2,400 Canadians, between ages 40 to 59, about their their sexual health, happiness and pleasure, in addition to their sexual behaviour and attitudes.

"There is a public perception that as we age, sex becomes less important, less enjoyable and less frequent," said Robin Milhausen, sexuality and relationship researcher at the University of Guelph in Canada.

"The study findings indicate that most midlife Canadians are indeed leading satisfying and active sexual lives,” Milhausen said in press release.

The study was conducted by leading condom company Trojan in partnership with Sex Information and Education Council of Canada (SIECCAN).

The researchers found that sexual pleasure does not decrease with age.

Regardless of age category, 65 percent of the respondents said their last sexual encounter was very pleasurable.

How to fix bad hair days

Play it up, add curls or try dry shampoo to get rid of bad hair days.

Beauty expert Manisha Chopra, also the founder of cosmetic brand SeaSoul Cosmeceuticals, shares how:

♦ At times, if you haven’t washed your hair properly or are not in the mood to get a hair wash done, a dry shampoo can be a saviour. Spray it lightly on the roots. Leave it for a few minutes and then brush your hair. The dry shampoo absorbs the oil and gives you your desired look. If you do not use a dry shampoo, then try out cornstarch or baby powder. They, too, can work wonders on unruly hair.

how-to-fix-bad-hair-days
♦ You woke up from your deep slumber and realised that your hair has become frizzy. Fret not. The mess can be treated by just tying it up. A ponytail has many variations, try any one of those low or high ponytail styles or go for a chic fish-braid. But ensure that you haven’t tied your ponytail too tight as it can cause hair loss.

♦ Adding more curls can give volume to your hair. Try adding curls naturally by making loose braids on your hair and then leaving it open after a few minutes. If you have a curling iron at home, here’s what you can do to get bouncy tresses. Tie your hair up in a high pony tail. Split it into four sections and then curl each section separately. Open the ponytail and prepare to be wowed by what you see in the mirror.

Dr Ananda Shankar Jayant unstoppable dance journey

I am #AnandaShankarJayant, a  #BharataNatyam & #Kuchipudi dancer , from Hyderabad, India.

My passion for dance began early in life – a chance meeting at a temple , when I was 4 years old – a comment that ‘This child has large eyes – you must teach her dance’, saw my mother #SubhashiniShankar enroll me  into dance classes.. And thus began my tryst with dance
My dance training continued in Hyderabad, until I won a gold medal at the age of 11 and was invited to join Kalakshetra, to take up dancing full time.

my-dance-with-big-c-by-dr-ananda-shankar-jayantTrained by brilliant gurus, I spent six years at Kalakshetra, learning Bharata Natyam, Carnatic music, Veena, dance theory, philosophy, Sanskrit, etc., and acquired a Diploma and a Post-graduate Diploma in Bharata Natyam

Even as I was busy, with a full time career of performing, teaching  and choreography , I simultaneously , and went on to  receive a Masters, and a Doctoral Degree , in Arts
I had been in dance for more than 4 decades, I had trained with the best in the field, performed across the globe, taught young and old alike, created, collaborated, and had woven a rich tapestry of artistry, achievement and awards – the crowning glory of which was receiving the Padmashri in 2007.

But nothing, nothing whatsoever, prepared me for what I was to hear on the 1st of July, 2008.That day I heard the word Carcinoma.  As I sat numb struck in my Doctor’s office, I heard other words – #Cancer, Stage, Grade.

Until then Cancer was a Zodiac sign, stage was what I danced on and grades were what I got in school.
But that day they took on an ominous meaning.

As a dancer I know the Navarasa –(Shringara, Hasya, Karuna, Roudra,Veera, Bhibatsa, Adhbhuta, Shanta and Bhayanaka) -  I thought I knew what Bhayanaka was, that day I learnt what fear was. That day I also realized that I now had an unwelcome, uninvited, new life partner.

Wear the right shoe for the right occasion!

Shoes have the power to make or break your outfit while elevating your mood. Loafers or moccasins have always been considered excellent driving shoes and if you’re road-tripping your way through your holiday destination, it is a great shoe to invest in, says an expert.

According to Neha Kumthekar, co-founder and managing director of shoe brand Oceedee, there are a few pairs of shoes that can take you from sight-seeing to dinner to partying without killing your feet.

Here are the tips and styles Kumethkar shared:

wear-right-shoe-for-right-occasion♣ Sunny side up with cute sandals: When there is scorching heat and you are heading to the sandy beach or the hot boardwalk, make a statement with a funky pair of summer style sandals.

Add an interesting edge to your ensemble with creative prints. Rest your feet and relax in one of these easy-to-wear inspired flats and pep up your holiday mood already without losing out on precious suitcase space.

♣ Get on the go with the block heel: Block heels are all the rage and worth the splurge. They are the perfect way to stay trendy while keeping true to comfort.

It doesn't matter what your fashion persona might be, a block heel is the perfect style twist to any outfit and fits into any destination wardrobe.

Trends to watch out for this summer

Cross-body slings, flared pants and long-chain neckpieces are a few hand-picked trends that will make you look fabulous and cool when temperatures soar.

Priya Sachdev, founder of online luxury marketplace RockNShop, has a few suggestions:

♣ Pastels: Refresh your wardrobe with some of the soothing tones like powder pink, soft lavender, lime green and icy blue.

trends-to-watch-out-for-this-summer♣ Flared pants: They not only accentuate your curves, but also make your legs appear leaner and longer as well.

♣ Shining and conditioning: Polishing the shoes every week keeps them looking their best. This also helps to make them last longer. The ideal way of polishing the shoes is to use cream polish before applying a coat of wax polish.

♣ Shoe rotation: To cut down on the wear and tear of shoes, shoe rotation is important and for this purpose one needs more than one pair of good shoes to avoid wearing the same shoes every day.

♣ Use a shoe horn: Using a shoe horn is the best procedure while getting into a quality shoe as it saves the heel collar, the top part of the heel from breaking down.

Healthy lifestyle can help you live cancer-free

Just adopting a healthy lifestyle by refraining from drinking alcohol and smoking, maintaining a healthy body weight and exercising regularly can help you keep deadly cancer at bay, new research reaffirms.

About 20-40 percent of cancer cases could potentially be prevented through modifications to adopt a healthy lifestyle, the study found.

A large proportion of cancer cases and deaths can be prevented if people quit smoking, avoided heavy drinking, maintained a body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 27.5, and got moderate weekly exercise for at least 150 minutes or vigorous exercise for at least 75 minutes, the study said.

The research, published online in the journal JAMA Oncology, analysed data from two study groups of White individuals to examine the associations between a "healthy lifestyle pattern" and cancer incidence and death.

Sharing personal info helps women get hired

A female applicant strongly raises her chances of getting hired if she gives out personal information, finds a new study, contradicting the conventional theory that if a woman wants equal footing professionally, she should not share any personal information.

The findings showed that female candidates who gave personal information clarifying her resume gaps raised their chance of being hired by 30 to 40 percent, compared to a comparable female candidate who provided no personal information.

"Our study provides the first-ever evidence that women who conceal personal information dramatically lower their hiring prospects," said Joni Hersch, professor at Vanderbilt University in the US.

Employers overwhelmingly preferred to hire female candidates who provided information to explain a resume gap, regardless of content.

"If we start to encourage honest conversations between employers and employees on an official level, it could lead to meaningful change in the quality of applicants, particularly in industries that have been so resistant to providing family-friendly work policies," added one of the researchers Jennifer Bennett Shinall from Vanderbilt University.

Beware! Baby's cry can alter your brain functions

A constantly crying baby can not only hamper your peace, it can also rattles your brain functions and alter the way you think and act to make daily decisions, a study has found.

The brain data revealed that the infant cries reduced attention to the task and triggered greater cognitive conflict processing than infant laughs.

"Parental instinct appears to be hardwired yet no one talks about how this instinct might include cognition," said David Haley from the University of Toronto.

They asked participants to rapidly identify the colour of a printed word while ignoring the meaning of the word itself.

Brain activity was measured using electroencephalography (EEG), which took place immediately after a two-second audio clip of an infant vocalisation.
