Stop policing, don't sanitize art: Swara to Nihalani

Bollywood actress Swara Bhaskar on Friday came out in support of Anurag Kashyap's "Udta Punjab", and in an open letter to Censor Board chief Pahlaj Nihalani she said that "sanitizing art and popular culture was not the healthiest thing for society".

stop-policing-dont-sanitize-art-swaraShe also said that an atmosphere of 'sanitization' and 'policing' produces fear among artists and creative people.

"I want to bring to your attention that a deliberately sanitized art and popular culture may not be the healthiest thing for a society. No society in the world is sanitized. There is a lot that is wrong, dirty, shameful, filthy and abusive everywhere in the world," she wrote in the letter.

"Art reflects its context and the society it was created in. To produce a sanitized art, that is unable to accommodate or reflect the less savoury aspects of society is to wear blinders, unnecessarily," she added.

"I hope Shyam Benegal committee's report is implemented very soon because he is the most idealistic and knowledgeable filmmaker we have in the country. sudhir-mishra-on-shyam-benegal-committee-report"This is a very old set of rules you work with. Time has totally changed. I think it will be implemented very soon," the "Yeh Saali Zindagi" helmer said at a screening of films directed by The Homeless Children of Vatslya Foundation on Thursday.

Benegal was handed the responsibility of revamping the guidelines in the censor board, with numerous established names such as Kamal Haasan, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra among others in the committee, in January this year.

The committee submitted its report in April.

He added, "Cinema is a voluntary act; you buy a ticket and then watch it. If you don't want to see it, you walk out. I mean everybody is entitled to his or her view so if television, media is allowed their point of view then why not filmmakers?"

Skin care tips for women in 30s

It's time to understand your skin better and care for it according to your unique needs. From cleansing regularly to indulging in a one-minute facial, women in their 30s need to take good care of their skin, says an expert.

Divya Mehta, Co-founder and Head, EpiqueLabs, suggests how:

♦ Cleansing: Start and end your day by using a gel-based cleanser that is gentle yet effective. Cleansing ensures that your skin can breathe properly and clean skin also helps with the efficacy of the products you apply. Without proper absorption, the cream will not be able to benefit your skin, as it should.

♦ Exfoliate to boost your cell renewal: Exfoliate to get rid of all the surface dead skin cells. This helps with cell turnover and increases circulation. The result is healthy skin that glows naturally.

Massage your face in an upward motion using the tip of your fingers and stimulate your skin by tapping on it gently. End the massage by wrapping your hands on your face to give an added massage to the dermis. It will help keep dull skin at bay.

Keep fit with special exercises for women this summer

Working out in summer can be bit of a challenge, given the heat and the sweat.

keep-fit-with-special-exercises-for-women
Here’s listing the simplest and fun-to-do workouts for summer as suggested by fitness trainer Kiran Krishna kumar which you can either do at a fitness center or while just taking a stroll around the nearby community park.

Side Plank: This exercise tones several abdominal muscles. Lay down on the left side, keeping your knees straight. Use your left arm and elbow to support your upper body. Now, raise your hips, so that there is a straight line between your shoulders and ankles. Hold this position for 30 seconds while breathing normally and then ease out to the resting position. Turn and repeat the same from the right side of your body.

Second position plies: Stand with your feet spread wider than shoulder-width, slightly turn out your toes and bend your knees to lower your body so that your thighs are parallel to the floor. Now, raise your arms overhead, while resting down and back the shoulders. Hold that position and breathe normally before pushing yourself back to the first position.

in-madaari-playing-more-mature-cop-than-my-other-cop-characters
When asked about the difference between his role in "Madaari" as compared to another role in the recently-released "Traffic", both of cops, Jimmy said, "You think that it is a cop, he is something else, you don't know who he is. You see it on July 15. It's basically a CBI guy, it is a far more mature character, or a matured cop from what I have done before." Jimmy was present at the launch of a song from "Madaari".

Jimmy will be seen in a thick moustache and sporting glasses in his role, trying to solve the mysterious abduction of a home minister's son. Previously, he has also played a cop in "Special 26" and "A Wednesday".

Censoring films can hurt government as much as press consorship

The "Udta Punjab" controversy shows some of the worst manifestations of governance in the country. First, it highlights the failure of the Punjab government led by the Akali Dal and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to check the drug menace.

Secondly, it once again brings to light the political role which the censor board has been playing ever since its chief, Pahlaj Nihalani, a known votary of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was put in charge.

censoring-films-can-hurt-government
But for his subservience to the saffron camp, this B-grade filmmaker wouldn't have made it to such an important position.

It is not surprising, therefore, that he has been trying to shoot down "Udta Punjab" since it deals with a major problem in the state.

With the state assembly elections due next year, the Akali Dal-BJP government will understandably be nervous about the impact of the film if its uncensored version is released.

Nihalani's political interests are evident from his charge that the producer, Anurag Kashyap, has received money from the Aam Admi Party (AAP) for his criticism of the censor board.

The AAP will make its first major foray outside Delhi in the Punjab polls and is expected to do well.

However, the point which the Union government, and especially the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, will have to consider is whether "soaring" India, about which the government is so vocal, can be pulled down by unworthy political servitors in key official positions.
