$25 bn revenue potential for Indian, Israeli startups

A cumulative cross-border investment of $25 billion into Indian and Isareli #startups has $25 billion revenue potential by 2025, said a report by global software firm #Accenture and Indian IT industry lobby #Nasscom on Wednesday.

"$25-billion cross-border investment into Indian and Israeli startups can create 25 world class products across sectors, with $25 billion revenue from them by 2025," said the report "Collaborative Innovation: The vehicle driving Indo-Israel prosperity".

The report was released to mark the 25th anniversary of the diplomatic ties between the two countries and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ongoing visit to Israel.

Google's virtual exhibition brings world's fashion at fingertips

Technology giant #Google's Arts and Culture arm on Thursday launched a new virtual exhibition project that will showcase 3,000 years of the world's fashion and style, the company said in a statement.

The project 'We wear culture' is in collaboration with 183 renowned cultural institutions from around the world, including India, and will let people explore the history of clothes dating as early as 3,000 years ago from the ancient Silk Road, to the courtly fashion of Versailles, to the unmatched elegance of the Indian saree.

"We invite everyone to browse the exhibition on their phones or laptops and learn about the stories behind what you wear," said Director of Google Arts and Culture Amit Sood in a statement. 

"You might be surprised to find out that your saree, jeans or the black dress in your wardrobe have a century-old story. What you wear is true culture and more often than not a piece of art," Sood added.

14 tech startups graduate from Microsoft Accelerator

Fourteen #startups which were part of #Microsoft_Accelerator's 10th cohort graduated at the Summer 2017 edition of 'Think Next' here, the company said on Wednesday.

Think Next is Microsoft Accelerator's flagship forum which brings together thought leaders in technology who are driving transformation via innovation. 

The 14 startups are Acebot, Active.ai, FirstHive, Heckyl, Karomi, Lavelle Networks, LetsTransport, QuestionPro, Sigtuple, Syscloud, Tricog, vPhrase, WittyParrot and Zenatix.

The graduating cohort was presented to an audience of over 400 representatives from leading corporates, investors, industry thought leaders and Microsoft leadership, the company added.

Startups only way to utilise demographic dividend: President

President #Pranab_Mukherjee on Wednesday said that #startups and small businesses were the only way India could "fully utilise" its demographic dividend and that they must come up to create jobs for the millions of youth entering the working population.

Addressing the special session of All India Management Association (AIMA) at the Rashtrapati Bhavan to mark its diamond jubilee, he added that there was also an urgent need for management education in India to complement training for entrepreneurship. 

"The youth, simultaneously, need to be equipped with suitable skills to man the jobs that get created," Mukherjee said.

Snap Inc acquires location analytics startup for $200 mn

#Snapchat's parent company Snap Inc has acquired Placed -- a Seattle-based start-up that operates a consumer location analytics platform -- for nearly $200 million.

According to a report in GeekWire on Tuesday, the deal is one of Snap's most expensive acquisitions.

"Over the past 12 months, Placed has measured more than $500 million in media spend to store visits, across thousands of campaigns and hundreds of partners, cementing Placed as the leader in location-based attribution," David Shim, CEO and co-founder of Placed wrote in a blog post. 

He said that by partnering with Snap, the company "will do even more".

'Android O' beta released, Android OS now on 2 bn active devices

Affirming its dominance in the tech world with announcing beta version of #Android_O operating system, #Google is celebrating the milestone of reaching two billion monthly active Android devices globally.

On the first day of its annual I/O conference at its Mountain View headquarters in San Francisco late on Wendesday, Google said "Android O" -- that will be released later this year -- would bring more fluid experiences to the devices as well as improvements to areas of the phone called "vitals" like battery life and security. 

"With picture-in-picture, you can seamlessly do two tasks simultaneously, like checking your calendar while planning a party on a Duo video call. And Smart Text Selection improves copy and paste," the compnay said in a statement.

Flipkart, Amazon top LinkedIn's companies list

E-commerce companies #Flipkart and #Amazon, for the second year in a row topped LinkedIn India's top companies list 2017, a statement said here on Thursday.

The professional network site on the Internet said the list is fuelled by exclusive LinkedIn data, including job seeker reach, engagement and retention.

LinkedIn has around 500 plus million members.

The statement said the list of 25 top companies in India also saw over 30 per cent new entrants like One97 Communications, Tech Mahindra, Swiggy, IDFC Bank, Vodafone, Grofers, McKinsey & Company and Oracle. Among the companies making upward movement are Ola from last year's number 10 to number 5, OYO Rooms from number 16 to number 9, Reliance Industries from number 23 to number 10 and Cisco from number 24 to number 16.

Over 90% startups in India fail in first five years: IBM

Owing to the lack of pioneering innovation and stalled funding, more than 90 per cent #startups in India fail in the first five years, a study by software major #IBM revealed on Wednesday.

The startups in the country are facing funding roadblocks both at entry and exit stages while successful global startup ecosystems are well supported by active investor communities.

"We believe that startups need to focus on societal problems like healthcare, sanitation, education, transportation, alternate energy management and others, which would help deal with the issues that India and the world face," said Nipun Mehrotra, Chief Digital Officer, IBM India/South Asia, in a statement.

India understands the potential of technology and should aspire for nothing less than a leadership role when it comes to adopting Internet of Things #IoT ecosystem to improve efficiencies across sectors, a senior bureaucrat said here on Wednesday.

Launching the second edition of the 'IoT India Congress 2017', Information Technology Secretary Aruna Sundararajan said with the two largest industries -- information technology (IT) and telecom -- that power the IoT industry, India is poised to become a winner in this space.

"The capabilities in entrepreneurship in different sectors, the aspirational and second-to-none startup community in India and the young demographics makes me optimistic that India can forge ahead in this direction," Sundarajan told reporters here.
Conceptualised, designed and organised by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) India, the IoT India Congress is country's largest platform for accelerating business outcomes in IoT.

Oracle to help Jharkhand become startup hub

In a bid to improve citizen services, increase employment and encourage startup investments in the state, the Jharkhand government and tech major #Oracle signed a Memorandum of Understanding #MoU here on Monday.

Oracle will offer its support to the state through its portfolio of technology solutions -- including Oracle Cloud -- which are already empowering governments globally. 

"We want to be the top choice with global companies for investments and be India's start-up hub. Oracle's rich global experience, technology expertise and strong capabilities, make them ideal partners for us," Chief Minister Raghubar Das told reporters here.

UN Technology innovation lab to be set up in Kerala

The Kerala Government and #UN's Office of Information and Communication Technology will join hands to set up the country's first #UNTechnologyInnovationLab here, it was announced on Wednesday.

The Kerala Startup Mission will be spearheading this initiative on behalf of Kerala government and water, sanitation, mobility and agriculture are areas the state government have identified as best suited for this innovation centre, as it would not only address the needs of the state but also can be a collaboration lever with other UN member states experiencing similar issues, said an offical.

The start-ups in the state will be working closely with the Innovation lab to build products addressing these issues.

Google announces new programme to inspire entrepreneurs, developers

US tech giant #Google on Friday announced a new #Solve_for_India initiative that aims to expand and energise the start-up ecosystem in tier 2 cities across the country.

The programme will inspire new wave of entrepreneurs and startups in emerging cities like Pune, Jaipur, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kochi, Indore, Nagpur, Nashik, Madurai, Kanpur and Chennai. 

"There is a growing number of entrepreneurs in smaller Indian cities who are focusing on building solutions that caters to the real needs of India. Through this initiative we want to bring the best of Google under one programme and join forces with them to help create solutions that serves the needs of a billion Indians," said Karthik Padmanabhan, Programme Manager Lead for Google India, in a statement.

PositiveShift launches global learning network WIISE

Skill development company #PositiveShift on Thursday announced the launch of a global learning network to provide access to affordable and quality content "anywhere anytime".

Built with a seed investment of $750,000, the WIISE learning network comprises different models to deliver the content online or through television.

Vijay Ketan Mitra, CEO, Founder and Executive Coach at PositiveShift, told reporters that they plan to raise $15 million in Series A funding over the next six to nine months.

The network will cater to high school students (Class 8 to 12), competitive exam market and the employees looking to do new courses.

Cisco to skill 250,000 students in India in security, IoT

Aiming to help create #startups and build successful technology careers, #Cisco will train 250,000 students in the country over a period of time, a top executive from the global networking giant said.

"We have done a lot of work in education and there are campuses that use our technology. We will skill 250,000 students in the country around networking, security and IoT areas over a period of time," Dinesh Malkani, President, Cisco India & SAARC, told.

Cisco and RV College of Engineering (RVCE) earlier this month announced the launch of a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Internet of Things (IoT) for digital skills and training in Bengaluru.

"We are extremely focused on India. We have been here for 20 years, we have R&D facilities, global delivery centres and have also invested heavily in the country in regards to Digital India perspective," Malkani said.

Microsoft buys startup to boost its cloud

Software giant #Microsoft has bought #startup #Deis that specialises in containers -- a modern way to develop and deploy software.

The deal is seen as a boost to Microsoft's cloud because software containers are termed as the new building blocks of cloud-based applications. 

According to a report in Fortune on Monday, the containers constitute a hot category as many businesses are turning to third-party public clouds -- like Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services -- to run their applications. 

"Deis gives developers the means to vastly improve application agility, efficiency and reliability through their Kubernetes container management technologies," said Scott Guthrie, Executive Vice President Microsoft in a blog post.

USIBC joins iCreate entrepreneur incubation initiative in Ahmedabad

The US-India Business Council #USIBC on Friday announced to partner the International Centre for Entrepreneurship and Technology #iCreate, an entrepreneur incubation centre in Ahmedabad.

The USIBC will support the iCreate's work in areas such as sharing of mentorship programme, research and startup collaboration, establishing centres of excellence and innovation, labs for pilot programmes and exploring funding opportunities for entrepreneurs and other allied activities, the council said in a statement.

Cisco, RVCE launch 'Centre of Excellence' in IoT

Global networking giant #Cisco and RV College of Engineering (RVCE) on Monday announced the launch of a Centre of Excellence #CoE in Internet of Things #IoT for digital skills and training.

The centre, located at the RVCE campus in Bengaluru, was inaugurated by Gaurav Gupta, Principal Secretary of Karnataka's Department of IT, BT and S&T, and VC Gopalratnam, SVP-IT and CIO-International, Cisco.

"With the Centre of Excellence here, we are giving students and working professionals across the state access to the skills and training to help them create startups and build successful technology careers," said Gopalratnam.

Over the next five years, the centre will provide a specialised curriculum, preparing up to 10,000 students from 50 colleges across the state for careers in the digital world.

Raising funds major challenge for internet startups: Study

Even though the government has been trying its best to ensure sustained funding for startups, a large number of internet-based #startups are yet to get any formal funding in the form of business grants, loans or lines of credit, a survey said here on Thursday.

A dipstick survey of bootstrapping 2,925 internet startups by the Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) suggested that this shortage of funds persists despite nearly 74 per cent of them leveraging mobile technologies to scale up their businesses.

The survey was conducted in the cities of Jaipur, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune and New Delhi.

The survey found that while a majority 74 per cent of the respondents are leveraging mobile technologies to boost their businesses, 12 per cent of the respondents had completely mobile-based products.

Amazon launches innovation service centre in China

The cloud-computing arm of #Amazon on Tuesday launched its first joint innovation service centre in China's Qingdao.

The Qingdao-Amazon Web Services (AWS) centre aims to provide cloud-computing services -- including web services, new technologies such as cloud-computing and big data, and capital and services support -- to global startups.

AWS Global Vice President and AWS China Executive Director Rong Yongkang said the centre would fuel Qingdao's innovation and development, Xinhua news agency reported.

"In the next five years, the centre will work with Qingdao government to support 750 innovation firms," said Rong.

'Snapchat' most-searched app on App Store

Although Snap's stock price was a bit down this week, #Snapchat is the top searched app on the iOS App Store, a media report said.

According to a report in Forbes magazine, Snapchat led all competitors in App Store search volume and as a result, Snapchat was also the app people were looking for most frequently.

Snap Inc, the parent company of picture messaging app Snapchat, went public earlier this month. The young company, founded in 2012, posted a $515 million loss last year.

According to Snapchat, 158 million people use the service each day and create 2.5 billion "snaps" between them. 

Facebook-owned photo-sharing app Instagram was placed on the second spot, while social media giant Facebook's mobile app took the third rank.
