Fast fashion needs to slow down, say designers

When you do six shows a year, there's not enough time for creative enterprise, an industry expert had once said. The #Indian_fashion_industry is also undergoing the same concern as the growing demand has boosted #fast_fashion -- resulting, as many designers say, in mindless consumerism and environmental hazards.

fast-fashion-needs-to-slow-down-say-designers
The fashion industry was estimated to be worth over Rs 720 crore ($110,000) in 2015.

It is said to be growing rapidly, with two major fashion weeks happening bi-annually, and several other city-specific, smaller but significant extravaganzas, giving a chance to hundreds of designers catering to couture, pret, kids wear, resort wear, mens wear, lingerie and the accessories sector. And, with the arrival of international brands like H&M, Forever 21 and Zara in India, a new generation of shoppers is on the rise.

And to cater to that, industrial involvement -- leading to pollution -- is becoming rampant.

Designer Rahul Mishra, who has now become one of the most sought after Indian names in the fashion industry internationally, explained: "In every market, anything that sells in the economy, is either for a service or for consumption.

'Life' has been about enjoying myself: Jake Gyllenhaal

Actor #Jake_Gyllenhaal, for whom Bollywood is mostly about musical numbers, says his upcoming movie "Life" has been an experiment in enjoying himself and having fun during work, rather than investing a lot of energy into it.

Jake, 36, plays the role of David Jordan in the upcoming science fiction horror film which releases in India on March 24.

In an interview here, the Oscar-nominated actor said: "To me, 'Life' was an experiment and about enjoying myself and having fun."

He said director Daniel Espinosa's flick -- a thriller about scientists trapped in space with a vicious alien -- is a "big scary movie".

"And most of the roles I play and the movies I have been in, have sort of challenged me and taken a sort of energy from me. One of the decisions I had made out of this ('Life') was to enjoy myself and make a big fun scary movie," Jake told.

Asked if the actor -- best known for films like "Brokeback Mountain" and "Nightcrawler" -- wanted to work beyond Hollywood in international cinema, particularly Bollywood, he said his choice of films always depends on the story line and the filmmaker.

Evans was a big fan of the original Disney animation and thinks the music of the film is it's best point.

Stereotypes exist in all professions: Dia Mirza

Actor and social activist #Dia_Mirza says stereotypes exist in all professions, and not just Bollywood.

stereotypes-exist-in-all-professions-dia-mirza
"When I became a part of the film industry, people had the idea that girls who were having a good background, should not work in films. People shower so much love on actors, but when somebody in their family wants to become an actor, they become paranoid and think that acting profession isn't a good choice.

"These type of stereotypes exist in all professions," Dia, an environment activist, said at 'Power Women's seminar here on Thursday.

"Even women who are highly educated are considered as a curse because a section of people think that they can't have a good husband because they won't be able to manage home. So, to eliminate this type of mentality, we should discuss and talk on this," added Dia, who is married to Sahil Sangha.

She says the solution lies in financial power.

"The women who are financially independent, they can easily handle these situations."

"We just split the story into two films because the story was big (length wise). It was not the idea to start a franchise. The story should have the power to drive us to create a market, it shouldn't be the other way round. If we will go for a sequel or create a franchise without a good story, it will not last longer."

Asked if she was also a victim of nepotism in Bollywood while talking to media on Wednesday evening with the star cast of her forthcoming film "Phillauri", Anushka said: "First of all, every actor has her own journey in Bollywood. Moreover, if you are good at your work, people will show interest to collaborate with you, irrespective of your background."

"I have huge respect for Aditya Chopra who launched me. Ranveer Singh, Parineeti Chopra and all of us were not from the film industry! So being an outsider, I never faced nepotism," the "NH10" actress added.

Earlier this month, National Award winning actress Kangana Ranaut called filmmaker Karan Johar a 'flag-bearer of nepotism', which later turned into a full-blown controversy with the two celebrities making statements against each other.

The actress is all set to release her second film as producer "Phillauri" on March 24 under her home production Clean Slate Films. Besides her the film also stars Diljit Dosanjh, Suraj Sharma and Mehreen Pirzada.

The occasion was so special with the emphasis being on crafts and textiles which is the principle on which my entire 30 years is based," Madhu Jain said here.

"My collection is all about Ikat weaves and it is all double Ikat which is a fading art. These are select motives that I have picked out from my 30 years in the industry. I have borrowed them from friends, relatives for the show," she added.

"Two songs within minutes -- one for the song done by that talented Papon on the Brahmaputra river and the other for Navratna Oil the one I endorse... A fun version, adding bits and pieces to an already given track, but giving additions in the company of music director Rohan, is always fun, he added.

The "Piku" star shared that while recording songs, he always feels some "madness" in it.

"There is some madness that always prevails at such moments… A madness to just loosen up, be light, be in sun and in sunshine, be away from any bindings limits and barriers," he wrote.

Wearing skinny jeans, oversized bags may up your back pain

Suffering from severe back pain? Blame your clothing and accessories such as #skinny_jeans, oversized bags and those worn on one side of the body, coats with large #fluffy_hoods, high heeled shoes and #backless_shoes, according to a survey from the British Chiropractic Association (BCA).

wearing-skinny-jeans-oversized-bags-may-up-your-back-pain
The survey showed that three-quarters (73 per cent) of women have suffered with back pain and their wardrobe could be a major cause of the discomfort.

"While overloaded and heavy handbags are a common culprit, some more unexpected items like skinny jeans can also wreak havoc -- they restrict free movement in areas such as the hips and knees, affecting the way we hold our bodies," Tim Hutchful, chiropractor at BCA, said in a statement on Tuesday.

"New trends such as asymmetric hemlines, oversized sleeves and hoods and heavy jewellery can also create problems," Hutchful added.

While over a quarter (28 per cent) of women are aware clothing effects their back, one-third of women (33 per cent) were completely unaware that their choice of clothing could impact their back or neck health.

How Vidya Balan transformed herself to fierce 'Begum Jaan'

Acclaimed filmmaker Srijit Mukherji revealed on Tuesday how #Vidya_Balan, who has been known for her jovial and down-to-earth personality, completely transformed herself to no-nonsense brothel madam #BegumJaan.

how-vidya-balan-transformed-herself-to-fierce-begum-jaan
"Before we started shooting 'Begum Jaan' we organised two workshops simultaneously. One with Vidya, another with girls... because Vidya is a jovial down-to-earth person and she easily mingles with everybody on set and I didn't want that. I wanted certain kind of distance with the girls from Vidya," he said at the trailer launch of the film.

"Vidya used to ask many questions during the workshop like what the memories of 'Begum Jaan' were when she was three, when she was first exploited or what happened when she got married. So at the end of the workshop, I had already completed writing four scripts... one 'Begum Jaan' and others are the prequels and sequels. I had to keep ready all the backstories of 'Begum Jaan' and the girls," added the 'Zulfiqar' helmer.
