Now yogurt sugar free
The presence of added sugar in dairy products has always led the health conscious consumers to avoid them.
But a team of Danish researchers has made it possible to manipulate the metabolic properties of yogurt-producing bacteria to sweeten the yogurt naturally, while reducing sugar in the final product.
Also, using microbiological methods the researchers have almost eliminated lactose, so that those with lactose intolerance can enjoy the yogurt.
"The goal was to engineer the yogurt bacteria not to consume glucose, a fermentation product that is a particularly sweet form of sugar," said Eric Johansen, one of the researchers who is associate vice president at Chr. Hansen Holding A/S - a global bioscience company in Denmark.
The findings are detailed in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology.
The team engineered the bacteria not to consume glucose, a particularly sweet product of yogurt's fermentation.
Yogurt contains live cultures of bacteria known as streptococcus thermophiles and the bulgaricus subspecies of Lactobacillus delbrueckii.
When grown in milk, these two strains normally break down the lactose into two sugar components glucose and galactose, which is less sweet than glucose.
Then, the bacterium consumes the glucose and makes more galactose. The microbial tweak eliminates lactose, so those intolerant to the milk sugar can eat the yogurt.
Jogging without prior exercise damages knees
#Jogging without any proper prior exercise or #knee activity can damage the knee joints requiring them a long duration for recovery, said joint replacement experts.
According to them, anyone willing to start jogging should walk for two months, which will help in the increase of flexibility of the body and the knees preventing any kind of strain to the knee joints.
"A lot of people directly start jogging to get rid of fats in the body without performing any sort of exercises. This leads to the damage of the knees, leading to severe pain," said Palash Gupta, an orthopedician and joint replacement expert at Max Super Specialty Hospital.
He said that the prevalence of such cases among women stands at 70 percent.
"Most of the exercises aimed to reduce fats affect the knee. They create a gap between the joints and knee. If the patient does not get the correct treatment on time then surgery can be the only resort," Gupta said.
Mediterranean diet may lower heart attacks, strokes risk
A #Mediterraneandiet, high in fruit, vegetables, fish and unrefined foods, is likely to lower the risk of heart attack and stroke in people who already have heart disease, finds a new study.
The findings showed that for every 100 people eating the highest proportion of healthy "Mediterranean" foods, there were three fewer heart attacks, strokes or deaths compared to 100 people eating the least amount of healthy foods.
Some foods - particularly fruit and vegetables - seem to lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Eating more of these foods in preference to others may lower the risk factors.
However, avoiding a "Western" diet that included refined grains, sweets, desserts, sugared drinks and deep-fried food did not reveal an increase in the adverse events.
A banana a day may keep blindness away
If you love #apples, so also love the humble #banana. Eating a banana daily is likely to boost eye health and prevent vision-related diseases, a study has found.
Researchers have found that bananas have carotenoid -- a compound that turn fruits and vegetables red, orange or yellow and are converted into vitamin A, important precursors for eye health -- in the liver.

According to previous research, foods containing high levels of carotenoids also protect against chronic disease, including certain cancers, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
The study showed that banana rich in provitamin A carotenoids may offer a potential food source for alleviating vitamin A deficiency -- important for sight.
To combat vitamin A deficiency, researchers have been investigating methods to boost carotenoids in bananas.
